Strutting Their Stuff

Supermodels may not be quite as active today in fashion, accessories, beauty, and related initiatives as they have been at times in the past, in terms of the sheer number of deals being done. But they still have a strong presence in the celebrity licensing and collaboration space, appearing regularly as the stars of new collections. To illustrate, here are some representative apparel ventures that have occurred since the beginning of this year:

  • Coco Rocha and Xcel Brands announced last month that they would release a new range of fashion, accessories, and skin care products, with a debut set for next year. The focus will be on casual pieces, led by denim, such as the Canadian supermodel would wear when she’s not at work. Rocha plans to be fully involved in the decision-making for the line. It should be noted that Xcel is known for building businesses for social media influencers, and Rocha has established herself in that realm with five million followers. On the supermodel side, Xcel also oversees the Tower Hill by Christie Brinkley brand.
  • Kate Moss released a second affordable capsule with fast-fashion retailer Zara, also in June, following an initial collection that debuted at the end of November 2024. For the initial pairing, Moss worked with her stylist Katy England to design a 30-piece, 1990s-influenced, party-appropriate collection of skirts, dresses, coats, ballet flats, pumps, and other wearables. The second release, designed with England and England’s husband, rocker Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream, was music festival-themed, featuring pieces such as hot pants, camisoles, miniskirts, floral dresses, and bell bottoms, along with sunglasses, bags, boots, sandals, jewelry, and scarves.
  • Brooks Nader, best known for her yearly appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, partnered with Hudson Jeans for a spring 2025 collection of pieces made of denim and other materials. Ultra mini-skirts, bodysuits, shorts, and leather jackets were among the styles. In keeping with Nader’s own preferences, some pieces were more structured while others offered a relaxed fit, with both intended to be mixed and matched with each other.
  • In February of this year, Helena Christensen, former supermodel and now noted photographer, paired with Australian denim label Rolla’s for a collection backed by an ad campaign photographed by Christensen. The release included some of the model’s favorite pieces from Rolla’s line along with items from her own label with stylist Camilla Stærk, Christensen&Stærk. The Rolla’s Jeans x Helena Christensen collaboration was available online and in physical retail.

Supermodel-backed ventures can be lucrative. In May, Hailey Bieber sold her cosmetics brand, Rhode, to e.l.f. Beauty for $800 million, with as much as $200 million more to be added to the purchase price depending on future sales. The brand, which was founded in 2022, reportedly generated more than $200 million in net sales for the full year ending March 2025. Bieber will remain as chief creative officer.
