Gold Rush

The jewelry category has been a particularly active one in recent months, with a diverse roster of licensors signing deals for necklaces, bracelets, rings, and other fashion and fine baubles.

In the fashion/costume sector, examples in the past half year alone have included models (Kim Alexis with Royal Items), candy brands (Jelly Belly with O Thongthai), musicians (Snoop Dogg with King Ice and The Beatles with Efva Attling), actresses (Miranda Kerr with Swarovski), wedding planners (Mindy Weiss with Combine International), locations (New York Botanical Garden with Erwin Pearl), and accessories labels (Danielle Nicole with International Inspirations).

Although the landscape is getting more crowded and more varied, costume jewelry has long been a natural extension for a wide range of properties. On the other hand, deals involving high-end, fine jewelry have traditionally been relatively limited, focused largely on properties with close ties to the category, such as wedding-related brands or couture labels. That said, fine jewelry has also been seeing more licensing activity of late, as well as slightly more diversity in the properties it attracts.

In the last four months, for example, properties with new fine-jewelry deals have included late architect Zaha Hadid, with Georg Jensen of Denmark; former Jackson 5 singer Jermaine Jackson, with Aaron Shum Jewelry of Hong Kong; couturier Bouchra Jarrar, with Mauboussin of France; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, with Woorim of South Korea. These recent agreements illustrate the global scope of licensing in this category, especially on the luxury end of the spectrum.
